About

Welcome to Orn – a complex Dungeons and Dragons campaign which offers a whole series of adventures in a strange and remarkable setting

The Shape of Orn: 1

Recognising the strange indications from the General Rules to the Great Race, and (if they undertook the quest to find Callaghan) the unexpected position of the river where they encountered the Ennui Mosquitos, the adventurers may have begun to speculate on the shape of the world of Orn.

They may have theories that Orn is sharply curved, perhaps like a Dwarf's round helmet, so that all four trees can be roughly equidistant. The river would snake around some distance below the peak of the helm, where the Great Oak would sit.

Or it could, indeed, be a very small sphere, with a diameter of less than a thousand miles.

Currently, although the mists have lifted somewhat, visibility is still very limited.  They can't see far.  So whether the land of Orn is concave or convex cannot be determined by sight alone.

They may, of course, decide to try to work this all out by exploring the land. They have already visited the Great Oak, where Bar-Alda lies, which is surrounded by the Taiga forest; and the Ironwood, which is surrounded by the Rainforest, where Baxter's restaurant is setting up.

If they searched for Callaghan, they will have reached the eaves of the forest of Arden, and possibly encountered the guerilla kobolds. Although they will probably not have ventured far enough in to see the mighty Araucaria at its centre.  And it is possible that during the search for the Forest Dwarves they took a diversion into the Dry Lands, to see the Great Tree that they surround, Bhodi.

However, exactly how each of these fits together, and what lies between them, is probably obscure.  So they may wish to explore further, especially if they are intending to take part in the Great Race.

Therefore, some of the entries in this Phase of the campaign, rather than offer up pre-planned adventures, flesh out the terrain of Orn to enable the referee to run games that are essentially exploratory on the part of the players.
