Professor Jones’ Handy Spellbook

This is an introductory guide written by Professor Eloise Jones (see The Eccles Incursion).

Introduction

It is with great pleasure I present some of my recent research into the physical world and how that realm may be affected by those intricate processes and procedures that the illiterate and uninitiated refer to as the ‘occult’.  Indeed, that epithet is so far from being precise, as the various procedures set out plainly in this slim volume will attest.  For although some of these do require a great depth of concentration, knowledge and what may be called attunement, this author is confident that they can all be achieved with correct degree of good-humoured, industrious endeavour.

Indeed, I myself, working with my team of able researchers at the University, have already proven the efficacy of many of the formulae set out herein.  The practicality of others is well supported by the well-known literature of the subject, witness for example the Methods and Precepts of Mary Cavendish, et al. or the many records left by the late and much-missed Mlle. Du Châtelet.

Nevertheless, and with a heavy heart, it must be admitted that this represents quite the smallest selection of possible mechanisms for affecting our rich, lived world, and the many others which surround it.  And doubtless many other stratagems will be discovered in the future through diligent research.  My principal of selection has been, throughout, to record those practical mechanisms which reveal most about the fundamentals of natural philosophy and the universe.  In that, I believe, I have at least partially succeeded.

Finally, I must record my thanks to my family, and particularly my husband Jonathon, for their abiding patience during the compilation of this text, and the hours of painstaking proof-checking.  And in the latter, I was ably aided by the Ms Whites, without whose care there would be many more errors than those which, I fear, remain.  For which, as is customary, I bear full responsibility

Contents

A Note to Students: The various procedures in this guide are arranged broadly in order of increasing complexity.  Thus, each chapter should benefit from the work carried out in the preceding matter.  However, as with all things, the ultimate level of challenge is primarily set by the aptitude and stick-to-it-ivness of the assiduous practitioner.

Finally, to students of the female gender, I strongly urge the use of a garment currently unfashionable but supremely practical: to whit, a dress with pockets!
